Three Feather Traces
I printed my feather image three times onto cotton fabric. I embroidered wool and loose threads into the prints, I added ruffles along the edges of the middle print. My finished wall hanging is on display at Stroud Textile Festival from the 1st-23rd May 2010.

Lost Feather Trace
I reverse printed my feather image several times on a long piece of chiffon fabric and added red panels. My finished wall hanging is on display at Stroud Textile Festival from the 1st-23rd May 2010.

My Work

I am using a combination of stitch, photography and painting. My Textile Art is influenced by my travels and mixed media artists, such as Kurt Jackson, Peter Doig and Jessica Rankin. I have grown up in Cornwall and much of my work has been influenced by the beautiful scenery I have been surrounded by every day. I use the landscape as my inspiration, and include textiles as a material for art. For example, I have used coloured cotton to stitch into photographs to highlight areas on a small and large scale, whilst doing this I have discovered that the backs of stitched paper and photographs are particularly intriguing.
A sense of place is essential throughout my work. My photographs hold meaning to me but all my images are of views, places and things other people can also relate to seeing. My painting reveals texture underneath, and my stitch traces the lines in the image to add colour and raise the surface. I have linked the idea of traces to my visit to Stroud Museum in the Park. Collections and personal possessions are displayed in the museum for people to look at but the simple details can go unnoticed. I decided to use the ruffles on bonnets and the feathers on fans as inspiration for my work. I create wall hangings and decorative art such as bag panels and canvases. I like to be challenged and to attempt new techniques that I can possibly include in future works. I feel the most important thing is that Art is something I enjoy and will continue to enjoy throughout my life.
